Ulcers and Gastritis

Signs and Symptoms

 

1. Pain or discomfort the upper part of the abdomen.
2. Loss of appetite.
3. Nausea.
4. Heartburn.
5. Vomiting.
6. Belching or gas.
7. Dark or bloody stools.

What to do now

 

1. Go to a doctor if you think you have a stomach ulcer or gastritis.
2. Drink lots of water and other liquids to prevent dehydration, but avoid milk, which can increase acid secretion.
3. Take antacids.
4. Avoid aspirin ibuprofen, and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

When to call a doctor

 

1. If you vomit blood or material that looks like coffee grounds; these symptoms indicate internal bleeding.
2. If you develop symptoms of an ulcer along with severe back pain; your ulcer may be perforating the stomach or duodenum wall.
3. If you feel faint, cold, and clammy, or you actually do faint. These may be symptoms of a shock, usually resulting from massive blood loss.
4. If you have an ulcer and develop symptoms of anemia, such as fatigue and pallid complexion; your ulcer may be bleeding.
5. If you pass stools that appear dark red, Bloody or black.
6. if you have severe stomach pain.
7. If you have symptoms of an ulcer or gastritis that last more than two weeks.

How to prevent it

 

1. If you smoke, quit.
2. Do what you can to reduce stress.
3. If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.
4. Minimize use of aspirin and ibuprofen.
5. Avoid foods that upset your stomach.
6.To prevent an ulcer from recurring, carefully follow instructions for any ulcer drugs you are taking.
