Bad Breath

Signs and Symptoms

 

1. Offensive odor from the mouth.
2. Unpleasant taste in the mouth.
3. Inflamed and bleeding gums.

What to Do Now

 

1. Gently brush the top of your tongue with the toothbrush. Be sure to reach in back.
2. Brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day- especially after meals.
3. For a quick cover-up, eat fresh parsley or mint, an orange, an apple.
4. Rinse your mouth with mouthwash.

When to Call a Doctor

 

1. If your bad breath is accompanied by a toothache; you many have a cavity or an abscess. Have a visit to a dentist.
2. If your bad breath persists for no obvious reason after you’ve repeatedly and thoroughly flossed and cleaned your teeth, gums, and tongue for a week.
3. If your gums are inflamed and bleeding; this could be a sign of gum disease.
4. If your bad breath is accompanied by a fever, cough and mucus; this can be a symptom of a lung abscess.
 

How to Preven It

 

1. Brush and floss at least twice a day.
2. Brush your tongue at least once a day.
3. Have your teeth professionally cleaned once a year and examined by a dentist.
4. If you smoke, quit.
5. Go light on sugar, coffee, and alcohol; spicy foods such as garlic, hot peppers etc.; and strong-smelling foods such as dry fish etc.
6. Drink lots of water throughout the day.
